business European VoIP subscribers to become 88 million

It is expected that Europe will have 88 million VoIP users by 2012, according to research group InfoCom. This is A 240 percent rise over the 25.8 million VoIP subscriptions from June, 2007.

Europe's VoIP market is about double the US VoIP market because of strong competition by multiple providers.

business Ericsson prepared to let go its PBX unit

Ericsson has agreed to sell its PBX unit to Aastra Technologies for 650 million Swedish crowns ($102 million). Ericsson is the world's largest mobile network manufacturer.

Ericsson representatives claim that the company will focus on providing its broad portfolio of enterprise applications directly to operators and service providers.

business Vonage finalizes patent case with AT&T

It was a tough year for VoIP startup Vonage. First it was Verizon, then Sprint and finally, AT&T.

So far Vonage shall pay between $80 million to $120 to Verizon Communications Inc., depending on the results of its appeal of a court ruling on two patents, and $80 million to Sprint Nextel Corp.

business Vonage lost patent appeal

Vonage lost its patent appeal to Verizon and is now forced to pay $37.5 million more to that $80 million handed taken by Verizon so far. Not much of a surprise there.

Vonage, the VoIP patent scapegoat, gave major telcos, namely Verizon, Sprint and AT&T sums amounting $240 million.
