voip Regulatory New Four-Year Internet Tax Ban: Not Permanent

The House of Representatives approved a new four-year ban on Internet taxation, despite the objections of both Republicans and Democrats struggling a permanent ban. The current effective three-year ban on access taxes expires on Nov. 1.

However some states will be allowed to continue taxing Internet connections.

GrameenPhone, the Bengali mobile division of Norway's Telenor, has to pay $25 million to Bangladesh government for providing VoIP service. According to Bangladeshi law phone companies must use the state-owned land network for international calls. GrameenPhone has agreed to pay the fine.

The largest US carriers do not tend to contribute to democracy with their censorship and anti-consumer policies.

This is why the Open Internet Coalition demands that the Congress would consider legislation that would ensure communication "without threat of censorship or other anti-consumer behavior from a handful of gatekeepers."
